Donna Webb has been
making pottery now for over thirty years and she's become quite handy
at it. In her words: a vessel can be read as the dynamic tension between
external and internal forces; between the force from the inside which
creates volume and the force from the outside which limits and defines
the form. Color and texture on the surface of a vessel are as natural
as the rind on a melon or the shell of an egg. Natural objects and living
beings often seem to be "decorated" in ways that are expressive
of the form. Human beings have observed these natural patterns and have
a long history of decorating the tools and objects they made often painting
or tattooing them selves as well. I think of these things when I make
pottery.
